The Way — Editing a Tribute to Japan’s Roads
Earlier this year, I had the chance to jump on the edit for The Way — a beautifully shot motorcycle film by Max from Akin Moto. It’s a cinematic tribute to Japan’s most iconic roads and the machines that move through them. Winding through mountain passes, neon-lit Tokyo expressways, early morning starts, the kind of project you instantly want to be part of.
Max and the crew had already captured everything on the ground (and on the move). The footage came in from some seriously talented creatives:
Max Duff (Director)
Tyson Lloyd (Cinematographer)
Gorm Taube (Photographer)
Cam Pianta (Producer/Additional Cinematography)
I was brought in to take all that raw beauty and shape it into something cohesive, editing the trailer and handling the colour grade for the piece.
The aim was to honour the original vision: cinematic, grounded in story, and full of emotion. These roads aren’t just tarmac, they represent freedom, creativity, and purpose. That came through in the footage, and my job was to make sure it came through in the final cut too.
With VO from Tomohiko Nakane, sound design by Justin Harrison, and an epic score to work with, it was one of those edits where everything just clicked. A great team, a shared vision, and a story that didn’t need to shout to hit hard.
The trailer is live on YouTube now, and the full series will roll out week by week on Instagram — stories, photography, and new episodes. Worth following along.
